"Full of emotional depth, daydream saturated with sound, music and color." - Variety

The winner of the prestigious Un Certain Regard section at this year's Cannes festival and the Brazilian OSCARA candidate is the new production of award-winning director Karim Aïnouz. In his new film, the director takes us to Rio de Janeiro in the first half of the 1950s.

The painting was based on the best-selling novel "Invisible Life" by Martha Batalha, also translated into Polish.

IN CINEMA FROM 8 NOVEMBER 2019

Eighteen-year-old Eurídice and two years older Guida share not only sister ties, but also the feeling that they cannot live without each other. Both are young, ambitious and believe that the world is open to them.

Despite the fact that they had to be brought up in a conservative environment and a family without opposition on a daily basis, each of the heroines has a clear plan for life. Eurídice wants to become a famous pianist, while Guida dreams of learning true, great love. Unfortunately, dramatic events mean that women are separated and forced to live separately, knowing little about each other. However, they will never lose hope that they will finally find each other.

Both the novel and the film are a tribute to generations of invisible women, culturally reduced to the role of only wives and mothers. By following the fate of two rebellious sisters, the viewer gets to know a gallery of colorful characters - representatives of a declining aristocracy, the Brazilian middle class and the poorest residents of Rio.

Although breathing Brazilian spirit, it is also an extremely universal story.

Karim Aïnouz's film is called the "tropical melodrama." To tell the dramatic story of the sisters, he uses the poetics characteristic of this genre. It colors it with local colors, symbolism and music stimulating the senses. The director himself said in one of the interviews that the film is a kind of tribute to all the exceptional women he met on his way.
